BT23 Titanium Alloy: Premium Material for Aerospace and Industrial Applications

BT23 Titanium (VT23 / ВТ23) is a very high strength titanium alloy developed for heavy‐duty, structural, high‐performance applications. With UTS values up to ~1450-1600 MPa in sheet form and good performance in thicker sections, it offers outstanding strength combined with the weight advantage of titanium. However, to fully exploit these properties, one must ensure appropriate processing, heat treatment, product form specification and fabrication controls. If your design involves high loads, thick sections, demanding service conditions and weight savings (for example aerospace or high‐end industrial), then BT23 could be a strong candidate. For more routine loadings, a more common titanium alloy might suffice and reduce cost and fabrication complexity.

    What is BT23 Titanium Alloy?

BT23 is a heat-treatable titanium alloy composed of both α and β phases, offering superior mechanical properties. Known for its tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and fracture toughness, BT23 is designed to withstand demanding high-stress environments, including those found in aerospace and defense applications.

The alloy maintains high mechanical properties even in thick sections and provides excellent corrosion resistance with relatively low density. BT23 is used for aircraft structures, large forgings, hydraulic parts, and other components that require a high strength-to-weight ratio and reliable performance at temperatures up to about 350–400 °C.

Key Features of BT23 Titanium Alloy

    High Strength

BT23 titanium provides exceptional tensile strength up to 1030 MPa, making it suitable for high-stress aerospace components.

    Fatigue Resistance

With superior fatigue resistance, BT23 ensures long-term reliability in parts exposed to fluctuating stresses.

    Fracture Toughness

Known for its resilience, BT23 maintains fracture toughness even in extreme operating conditions.

    Weldability and Machinability

Unlike fully β alloys, BT23 offers better weldability and machinability, which makes it easier to fabricate and process into complex shapes.

    Applications of BT23 Titanium Alloy

    Aerospace

Engine components, landing gear, and aircraft frames made from BT23 benefit from its strength and resilience in extreme conditions.

    Defense

Military aircraft, rockets, and space vehicles use BT23 for components that require a high degree of strength and reliability.

    Heavy Industry

Pumps, compressors, and chemical plant equipment are made from BT23 due to its resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress.
