Titanium Balance Note

Titanium is the base element in OT4 / ОТ4, OT4-0 / ОТ4-0, OT4-1 / ОТ4-1, OT4sv / ОТ4св and OT4-1sv / ОТ4-1св. The remaining chemistry is controlled through aluminium, manganese and impurity limits to support formability, weldability and corrosion-resistant performance.

Role of Alloying Elements

Aluminium

Aluminium improves strength, thermal stability and lightweight performance in titanium alloys. In OT4-type grades, aluminium content changes the balance between strength and plasticity.

Manganese

Manganese improves technological behavior, hot workability and alloy processing performance. It supports forming, fabrication and Ti-Al-Mn alloy performance in OT4-type titanium materials.

Controlled Impurities

Controlled ElementImportance
IronControlled for consistent mechanical behavior
CarbonLimited to maintain titanium alloy quality
SiliconControlled for chemistry consistency
NitrogenControlled because it affects titanium alloy performance
OxygenControlled for strength, ductility and formability
HydrogenControlled because hydrogen can affect titanium quality
ZirconiumLimited according to grade chemistry
Other ImpuritiesLimited for MTC compliance and grade consistency

OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 Mechanical Properties

OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 is known for low strength and high plasticity. It is useful for sheet, pipe, bar and plate products where forming, bending, stamping and fabrication are important.

Its high elongation and lower strength make it suitable for complex-shape components and parts that require strong formability.

OT4-1 / ОТ4-1 Mechanical Properties

OT4-1 / ОТ4-1 mechanical properties depend on product form, thickness, annealing condition and final specification. It is selected where good technological plasticity, weldability and formability are required for sheet, plate, bar, tube and stamped products.

OT4sv / ОТ4св and OT4-1sv / ОТ4-1св Wire Mechanical Properties

OT4sv / ОТ4св welding wire is commonly referenced with tensile strength around 590–835 MPa and elongation around 7–10.5% for GOST 27265-87 wire.

OT4-1sv / ОТ4-1св welding wire is commonly referenced with tensile strength around 540–785 MPa and elongation around 7.5–12% for GOST 27265-87 wire.

Final values should be confirmed from the MTC, wire diameter, surface condition and applicable welding wire standard.

Hardness

Hardness values depend on grade, product form and heat treatment condition. OT4 / ОТ4 annealed material is commonly referenced around HB 207–285, while OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 bar is commonly referenced around HB 156–207.

Hardness testing helps verify machining behavior, forming suitability and finished component performance.

Density

OT4-type titanium alloys offer titanium’s lightweight advantage compared with many steel alloys. OT4 / ОТ4 density is commonly around 4550 kg/m³, while OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 is commonly around 4514 kg/m³ depending on composition and condition.

This low density supports lightweight fabricated parts, aircraft components, chemical equipment and marine titanium assemblies.

Annealing and Heat Treatment

OT4-type titanium alloys are commonly supplied in annealed or project-specific processed condition. Annealing helps improve ductility, forming response, stress relief and stability before fabrication or machining.

ProcessPurpose
AnnealingImproves ductility and stabilizes material condition
Incomplete AnnealingUsed where partial stress relief is required
Full AnnealingUsed for sheet, bar, forging or stamping forms where required
Stress ReliefReduces residual stress after forming or machining
Project-Specific Heat TreatmentSelected according to product form and application

Weldability

OT4 / ОТ4, OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 and OT4-1 / ОТ4-1 are used for welded parts and welded assemblies. OT4-0 and OT4-1 are suitable for titanium alloy fabrication where weldability, formability and corrosion resistance are required.

OT4sv / ОТ4св and OT4-1sv / ОТ4-1св are used as titanium welding wire and titanium filler wire for TIG welding, argon welding, titanium sheet welding, titanium plate welding and welded fabrication. Wire cleanliness, inert gas shielding and surface preparation are important for titanium welding quality.

Machinability, Formability and Corrosion Resistance

OT4 / ОТ4, OT4-0 / ОТ4-0 and OT4-1 / ОТ4-1 can be processed by cutting, turning, milling, drilling, grinding, cold forming, hot forming, stamping and deep drawing. Proper titanium tooling, coolant and process control are recommended for machining.

These grades provide corrosion-resistant titanium alloy performance for chemical equipment, marine components, heat exchangers, pressure equipment, industrial fabrication and welded assemblies.
